Happy start to the new year, now that we can put January behind us we can really start to look towards spring!

We know it doesn’t always feel like it but spring is right around the corner. We hope everyone had a great holiday season and like us, are hoping for an early start to spring weather! Unlike other recent winters, we have finally received some measurable snow but we are hoping for a dry February to allow us to get another early jump on our inputs and projects. Before winter set in, we were able to complete several baseball field renovations, including laser grading, sodding, rebuilding of mounds and home plates, setting new bases, and making soil amendments.

In the meantime, we are performingpreventative maintenance on our machines, trucks, and trailers, so when it’s time to get going, we will be ready to hit the ground running. In addition to performing maintenance on our equipment over the winter, you will likely see us at conferences such as The Eastern PA Turfgrass Conference on February 8th and KAFMO on February 16. Both conferences are located at Shady Maple so we hope to see some familiar faces at the local conferences this year.

Before winter set in, we were able to complete several baseball field renovations, including laser grading, sodding, rebuilding of mounds and home plates, setting new bases, and making soil amendments. As soon as Mother Nature allows, we will be out to a number of sites to continue our renovation work as well as our pre-season preparation work.

We also had another successful fall of fairway aeration, which ranged from early August to mid-December. If someone asks when a good time to do fall aeration is, I would say just about any time when the plants aren’t stressed and it works with your schedule!! We have also assisted or fully performed several driving range tee and par 3 tees that have either needed a fresh laser grade or transitioning from cool season grass to one of the

newer bermudagrass varieties. The cold, hardy bermudagrass plants recover extremely fast when given warm temperatures and a little time and attention instead of having to re-seed. We are still taking dates for spring and fall 2024 inputs on golf courses so feel free to reach out directly to Chris to get on our schedule!

Regarding a question we often get about usage when it comes to bermudagrass, we cannot put an exact date on when it is ok to open a field or a tee box, but we do recommend that you allow the plant to at least begin its “green up” so that you will have some recovery soon after. Golf courses tend to have better control of this by offering other areas of usage. However, for sports fields and scheduling many activities, we would not recommend playing before April 1; just use your best judgment. If the plant is still dormant, usage during this period will affect the green-up and the overall health of that area for the coming summer. You do not want to have to re-sod or sprig an area to have it come back because of excess wear in the early spring or late fall!! If bermudagrass is trafficked heavily in the summer, that is when it will best recover so just a reminder to use your areas when the turf is healthy and most actively growing (and recovering) if you can! Spring and fall for the cool season. Summer for warm season grasses.
